After the pandemic, the band returned to touring with renewed inspiration, looking toward improvisational legends like Grateful Dead as their creative North Star. Setlists became fluid. Songs stretched into expansive movements. Improvisation took center stage. Each night became its own musical conversation.

Their debut album Heartbreak Summer Camp was recorded in a living room in 2020 stripped down, DIY folk songs tracing their lives from teenage years into their mid-twenties. They followed it with Born Strangers, recorded at Tractor Shed Studio in Goodlettsville, Tennessee, and produced by Mike Eli LoPinto (Chris Stapleton, Emily Nenni). The album earned a devoted cult following and praise from outlets including American Songwriter, Holler, and Twangville. In 2025, The Montvales signed with Free Dirt Records and released the single “Loud and Clear,” signaling even more new music on the horizon.
The band received a Grammy nomination for Best Bluegrass Album for 2019’s Toil, Tears & Trouble and has also been recognized by the International Bluegrass Music Association, including a nomination for Entertainer of the Year. Their No. 1 single on the Bluegrass Unlimited chart, “Wanderers Like Me” captures the restless spirit and dedication that defines them.
